Bringing a carcass into Idaho

Idaho is the regulating authority for what you can bring in. Import restriction is keyed to CWD-documented states/provinces/countries (restricted_from_affected), with the listed low-risk parts allowed. CWD confirmed in Idaho since 2021 (Slate Creek, Units 14-15). Note: idfg.idaho.gov pages timed out on automated fetch; rule details verified via search-indexed text of IDFG's own cwd/import-ban and cwd/rules pages and an IDFG press release — re-confirm exact current wording on the live IDFG page.

Allowed for import

  • meat that is cut and wrapped (commercially or privately)
  • quarters or other portions with no part of the spinal column or head attached
  • boned-out/deboned meat with no brain or spinal tissue
  • antlers (removed from the head)
  • clean skull plate / cleaned skull with no brain tissue
  • hides/capes with no head attached
  • upper canine teeth
  • finished taxidermy mounts

Restricted from import

  • whole carcass
  • whole head
  • brain/brain tissue
  • spinal cord/spinal column
  • any part containing brain or spinal tissue from a CWD-documented state/province/country

Handling + processing

Ban applies to wild deer, elk, or moose from any state, Canadian province, or country (other than Canada) with a documented case of CWD. Whole heads cannot be imported from CWD states — antlers should be removed and skulls dried/cleaned.

Taking a carcass out of Idaho

When you hunt in Idaho and bring the carcass to another state, that destination state sets the rule. Because Idaho has confirmed CWD detections, several destination states apply their stricter "from a CWD-affected state" rule to carcasses originating here — plan to bring back lower-risk parts only.

Idaho on the CWD map

  • CWD confirmed in state
  • Under heightened surveillance
  • No known CWD detections

Zone status is informational, not a hazard rating. Detections expand over time — confirm current status with each state's wildlife agency.
