Bringing a carcass from Rhode Island to Illinois

Illinois restricts which deer and elk parts you can bring in from out of state, including from Rhode Island. You may generally bring back the lower-risk parts listed below; high-risk parts are prohibited. IDNR FAQ explicitly lists allowed parts as antlers on a cleaned skull cap, boned-out meat, and hides. Additional allowed items (canine teeth, finished mounts) per 17 Ill. Adm. Code 635.30 as referenced by IDNR. Ban is general (not limited to CWD-positive states). Verify with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources before transport.

Import ban applies to hunter-harvested deer and elk brought into Illinois from out of state; codified at 17 Ill. Adm. Code 635.30.

What to do before you transport

  1. Confirm the current rule directly with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources before you transport anything.
  2. Keep proof of where you hunted — many states require a label with your name, license number, and the state of harvest.
  3. Check Rhode Island's current CWD-zone status, since affected-zone designations can change between seasons.
  4. If your route crosses additional states, check each one — a state you only drive through can still regulate possession in transit.
